Local Students Named Top Seniors at UD
Robert Pagels and Gealina Dun have been selected as the recipients of the Alexander J. Taylor Sr. and Emalea Pusey Warner awards, respectively, as the outstanding man and woman of the University of Delaware's 2012 graduating class.
The awards are given annually by the UD Alumni Association to recognize the senior man and woman who most exemplify leadership, academic success and community service.

Local Students Find Success at National Research Conference
University of Delaware students received numerous awards at the annual conference of the Experimental Biology Meeting, held this year in San Diego.
As part of the conference, the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB) sponsored its 16th Undergraduate Poster Competition, in which 18 UD students took part. This is the 13th year in which students from the University's Howard Hughes Medical Institute's (HHMI) Undergraduate Science Education Program have attended the conference to present their research, and they have won more awards than students from any other institution.

The UDairy Creamery student management team at the University of Delaware has been selected as a top six finalist in the Dairy Research Institute (DRI) product competition to develop a cutting-edge dairy beverage.

Local Students Selected for University of Delaware's Homecoming 2012 Planning Committee
Thirty-one students have been chosen by the University of Delaware Office of Alumni Relations to help plan Homecoming 2012 and serve as members of the Homecoming Student Committee.
The group, selected from among more than 40 applicants, includes 20 freshmen, 11 sophomores and six juniors, and six of the University's seven colleges are represented.
In addition, six Student Alumni Ambassadors are serving on the committee.
Students will help plan, market and manage Homecoming events as well as coordinate community and student group outreach. In addition, all committee members will promote spirit and fun throughout the week of activities.

Local Students to Speak at National Biology and Biochemistry Conference
The ASBMB awarded two students complete coverage of the cost of their travel expenses to San Diego, amounting to about $1,125 each, and both students will be speaking at symposiums during the conference.

Local Students Graduate from the University of Delaware
The newest members of the University of Delaware's Class of 2011 and their achievements were celebrated during Winter Commencement ceremonies held Sunday, Jan. 8, in Newark, DE.
University President Patrick Harker welcomed an audience of more than 4,000, which included more than 500 new Blue Hens, as well as UD faculty, administrators and members of the UD Board of Trustees.

Local Students Among Best at National Championships
YoUDee, the first mascot in the First State, finished first and the University of Delaware cheerleading and dance teams placed near the top at the Universal Cheerleaders Association (UCA) College Cheerleading and Dance National Championships, held Jan. 13-15 at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.
For the fourth time in 11 years, YoUDee won the UCA's open mascot division, finishing ahead of Villanova, Tennessee Tech and Arkansas State universities.
The UD cheerleaders finished second in the Division I championships and the dance team, also in Division I, took second place in the hip-hop finals and ninth in the jazz finals.

Seven students from the Department of Fashion and Apparel Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences have received the 2012 YMA Fashion Scholarship Fund (FSF), a prestigious national award that includes a $5,000 scholarship, an internship and an "executive mentor" within the fashion industry.

Local Students Win Writing Awards at the University of Delaware
Ten University of Delaware students were recognized by the Center for a Public Anthropology for their participation in a North American writing competition involving more than 4,000 students from 25 schools.
UD's winners of the Public Anthropology Award wrote opinion pieces about how federal regulations can be properly balanced to allow researchers the freedom to pursue important projects as they see fit while making sure that such freedom is not abused and that the research serves the public good.

Local Students Present at Nursing Conference
Does open visitation in the ICU help or hinder recovery? Can an oral care program reduce the incidence of ventilator-associated pneumonia in kids? What is the relationship between cognitive function and weight maintenance in heart failure patients?
Clinician researchers shared the results of studies addressing these and other questions at Advancing Nursing: Developing Excellence in Evidence-Based Practice and Research, a conference held at the Ammon Medical Education Center on the Christiana Hospital Campus on Friday, Nov. 3. Close to 150 people turned out for the event, including a large contingent from the University of Delaware.

Local Students Present at Minority Research Conference
Addressing topics as diverse as the importance of kinship networks to African American single mothers, to the effect of viper venom proteins on melanoma cells, eight University of Delaware students will present their research at the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), Nov. 9-12, in St. Louis.

More than 200 students from 40 schools competed for awards in 35 judging groups at the symposium. UD students received first-place awards in 11 groups, more than half of the groups in which they competed.

Seven University of Delaware students have been named winners in an essay contest sponsored by the First Year Experience Program and based on the book The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.

UD sophomore Jenna Byers keeps busy as FFA Agricultural Ambassador
Having worked four jobs last semester, cutting down to three just wouldn't satisfy Jenna Byers, a sophomore in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources (CANR), so when she saw the opportunity to become an FFA Agricultural Ambassador, she decided to add a fourth.
In addition to being a full-time student as a food and agribusiness marketing and management major, Byers works as the UDairy Creamery's communications and marketing manager, is a Blue Hen Ambassador and serves as a research assistant studying poultry in the laboratory of Robert Alphin, instructor in the Department of Animal and Food Sciences and manager of the Agriculture Experiment Center.
And she has now also taken on the challenge of being an FFA Agricultural Ambassador, a term that will last until July 2012.
