UD student wins award for entrepreneurship

2016 May 4

Samantha Stokes, a sophomore majoring in Entrepreneurship, is one of five University of Delaware students to be honored for their entrepreneurial achievements and potential.

The winners will receive scholarships and awards from UD's Horn Program in Entrepreneurship for their accomplishments during the 2015-2016 school year. They will be officially recognized at an award ceremony on May 13 in the Venture Development Center, located on UD's Newark campus.

Stokes, who is from Atco, N.J., was named a co-recipient of the Shawn & Sheryl McCall Award for Entrepreneurship, granted for showing entrepreneurial promise.

She is currently developing her own business, called New Freedom Swim. The company will produce stylish swimsuits made from a special fabric that allows ultraviolet rays to penetrate the bathing suit, which will prevent tan lines.

Stokes will receive a check divided into a cash award, a stipend for active participation in Venture Development Center (VDC) programming, and VDC credit, which can be expended to further their entrepreneurial education through startup activity, participation in startup events and travel to meet with advisors and prospective customers.

The Horn Program, housed in UD's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, offers students experiential learning, evidence-based entrepreneurship and active engagement with entrepreneurs, business leaders and members of the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem.
