Herndon's Michelle Wei Shines at the University of Delaware

2011 Sep 23

Students at the University of Delaware College of Agriculture and Natural Resources have been busy with internships, attending conferences and conducting research.

Michelle Wei, a Resource Economics senior and a University of Delaware Ag Ambassador from Herndon, VA, attended "The Public Choice Outreach Conference" at George Mason University, a three day conference at the end of the summer where she was introduced to the field of Public Choice, a self described "research method" that aims to explore public policies and government through collective decision making research. One of the main emphasis of the lectures was a departure from economists assumptions that people are coldly rational and only self-interested. The series of lectures included voter behavior, the tradeoff's between pre-commitment and agency cost, effectiveness of problem solving at different levels of government, and bias' in law enforcement.
