Baltimore County, Md. native wins scholarship for entrepreneurship

2016 May 4

Sophomore Davis Pfund, an Entrepreneurship major and Chinese studies minor, is one of five University of Delaware students to be honored for their entrepreneurial achievements and potential.

The winners will receive scholarships and awards from UD's Horn Program in Entrepreneurship for their accomplishments during the 2015-2016 school year. They will be officially recognized at an awards ceremony on May 13 in the Venture Development Center, located on UD's Newark campus.

Pfund, who is from Middle River, Md., was named the winner of the David J. Freschman Scholarship for demonstrating strong potential to become a successful entrepreneur. The scholarship was established in memory of Freschman, a University of Delaware alumnus, entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

Currently, Pfund is working with a team of six on a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) I-Corps Sites Program to develop assistive technology for persons with visual impairment. He also is helping fellow classman Jacob Jeifa with his business, TenantU, and sells commercial LED lighting for Zerodraft Maryland.

According to the Horn Program, Pfund "possesses some of the qualities and characteristics that Freschman possessed, valued and encouraged, such as energy, enthusiasm, financial ability and good judgment, and demonstrates these qualities through prior work experience, academic achievement and involvement in extracurricular activities."

The Horn Program, housed in UD's Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics, offers students experiential learning, evidence-based entrepreneurship and active engagement with entrepreneurs, business leaders and members of the broader entrepreneurial ecosystem.
